Counterstriking

Counterstriking is a term used in strategic games, particularly real-time strategy (RTS) and some multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBAs), to describe a tactical maneuver where a player intentionally allows their opponent to attack or commit their forces to an offensive action, only to then launch a strong counterattack. The core principle is to exploit the opponent's overextension or commitment of resources.

This strategy often involves drawing the enemy into a specific area or engaging them in a way that leaves their base or other key objectives vulnerable. Once the opponent's attention is focused on the initial engagement, the counterstriking player shifts their forces to exploit the weakness, aiming for a decisive blow. This could involve destroying a vulnerable production facility, capturing an important objective, or overwhelming a poorly defended economy.

Successful counterstriking requires careful scouting and understanding of the opponent's intentions and capabilities. Players must be able to accurately predict when and where the opponent will commit their forces. It also demands strong micro-management and a swift transition between defensive and offensive postures. The risk associated with counterstriking is that if the opponent anticipates the move or if the initial engagement doesn't go as planned, the counterstriking player can be left vulnerable themselves. It is a high-risk, high-reward tactic that can turn the tide of a game.
