A cosmologist is a scientist who studies the origin, structure, evolution, and eventual fate of the universe. The field combines theoretical modeling and observational testing to understand the cosmos from its earliest moments to its large-scale structure today. Cosmology encompasses both observational cosmology, which analyzes data from telescopes and space missions, and theoretical cosmology, which develops mathematical models of the universe's components and dynamics.

Education and career: Most cosmologists hold advanced degrees in physics, astronomy, or related fields, typically culminating in a PhD. They work in universities, research institutes, or national laboratories and may be affiliated with space agencies or international collaborations. The work is often collaborative and interdisciplinary, spanning physics, statistics, and computer science.

Research approaches and topics: Cosmologists use observations such as the cosmic microwave background, surveys of galaxies and galaxy clusters, Type Ia supernovae, gravitational lensing, and 21 cm signals, together with numerical simulations and analytical theory. Major topics include the standard cosmological model (Lambda-CDM), the physics of the early universe (inflation), dark matter, dark energy, reionization, and the formation and evolution of cosmic structures.

Outcomes and methods: Results constrain cosmological parameters like the Hubble constant, the densities of matter and dark energy, and the amplitude of primordial fluctuations. Cosmologists publish theories and data analyses that guide our understanding of fundamental physics and the history of the universe.
