A Coriolis flowmeter is a type of mass flow meter that measures the mass flow rate of a fluid by utilizing the Coriolis effect. This effect is an inertial force that acts on a mass moving within a rotating frame of reference. In a Coriolis flowmeter, the fluid flows through a vibrating tube or tubes. As the fluid moves through the vibrating tube, it experiences the Coriolis force, which causes a slight twist or deflection in the tube.

The amount of twist or deflection in the tube is directly proportional to the mass flow rate of the fluid. The flowmeter uses sensors to detect this twist and converts it into a mass flow reading. In addition to mass flow rate, Coriolis flowmeters can also measure fluid density and temperature. These additional measurements are obtained by analyzing the frequency and amplitude of the tube's vibration.

Coriolis flowmeters are known for their high accuracy and ability to measure a wide range of fluids, including liquids, gases, and slurries, regardless of their viscosity or density. They are often used in applications where precise mass flow measurement is critical, such as in the chemical, petrochemical, and food and beverage industries. Their non-intrusive design means there are no moving parts in contact with the fluid, reducing wear and minimizing pressure drop. Calibration is typically performed at the factory, and they are generally reliable and require little maintenance.
