Corioamnionitis

Corioamnionitis is an infection of the amniotic fluid and membranes surrounding the fetus during pregnancy. It is typically caused by ascending bacterial infection from the lower genital tract, most commonly the vagina and cervix. The most common pathogens involved are group B streptococcus and Escherichia coli. Symptoms of corioamnionitis in the mother may include fever, uterine tenderness, and vaginal discharge. In severe cases, it can lead to preterm labor and delivery, fetal distress, and even fetal death.

Diagnosis of corioamnionitis is usually made through amniocentesis, where a sample of amniotic fluid is taken and examined for signs of infection. Treatment typically involves antibiotics administered to the mother to eradicate the infection and prevent its spread to the fetus. In some cases, delivery may be indicated if the infection is severe or if the fetus is at risk.

Corioamnionitis is a serious condition that requires prompt medical attention. It is more common in pregnant women with certain risk factors, such as a history of preterm labor, multiple pregnancies, or a previous cesarean delivery. Regular prenatal care and adherence to recommended screening and treatment protocols can help reduce the risk of corioamnionitis and its associated complications.
