Copeina

Copeina is a genus of freshwater fish belonging to the family Characidae. These fish are native to South America, found in the Amazon and Orinoco river basins. The genus currently contains two recognized species: Copeina guttata and Copeina arnoldi.

Copeina guttata, often called the "splashing tetra" or "raining tetra," is known for its unique breeding behavior. During spawning, the male will splash water out of the aquarium with his tail to moisten the eggs, which are laid on vegetation above the water line. This behavior is thought to help prevent the eggs from drying out and deter predators. C. guttata typically reaches a length of about 4 to 5 centimeters. They are omnivorous and feed on small invertebrates and plant matter.

Copeina arnoldi, also known as the "archers' tetra" or "penguin tetra," exhibits similar reproductive strategies, with the male splashing eggs onto leaves above the water. This species is slightly larger than C. guttata, growing up to 6 centimeters. They are popular in the aquarium trade due to their interesting breeding habits and relatively peaceful nature. Both species are characterized by their slender bodies and a distinctive spot near the tail fin. Their coloration can vary but often includes silvery sides and reddish or yellowish fins.
