Convolutiontype is a broad designation used to describe a family of convolution operators defined by the interaction of a source function with a kernel. In mathematics and signal processing, a convolution measures how much a function overlaps with a reflected copy of another function, producing a new function that is shaped by the kernel. The term is often used to discuss different implementations, kernel choices, and boundary conditions rather than a single fixed formula.

In both continuous and discrete settings, convolution is defined by pairings of two functions. The continuous convolution is (f * g)(t) = ∫_{−∞}^{∞} f(τ) g(t − τ) dτ. The discrete convolution is (f * g)[n] = ∑_{k} f[k] g[n − k].
