Sobel

Sobel is a surname of Ashkenazi Jewish origin. In addition to being used as a family name, Sobel appears in several technical and scientific contexts, most notably in image processing and statistics, where it refers to the Sobel operator and the Sobel test, respectively.

The Sobel operator is a discrete differentiation operator used to compute an approximation of the gradient of an image's intensity function. It uses two 3x3 convolution kernels, one to estimate the derivative in the x-direction and another for the y-direction. The resulting gradient magnitude and direction highlight edges and transitions in the image, making the operator a foundational tool in edge detection and feature extraction. It was introduced in 1968 by Irwin Sobel and Gary Feldman.

The Sobel test is a statistical method for assessing the significance of mediation effects in causal models. Developed by Michael E. Sobel in 1982, it tests whether the indirect effect of an independent variable on a dependent variable through a mediator is significantly different from zero. While widely cited, the test is sensitive to distributional assumptions, and bootstrap approaches are commonly used as alternatives in applied research.
