Conversion type, in computer science, refers to the set of rules and mechanisms by which a value stored in one data type is transformed into a value of another data type. This concept covers how languages automatically or deliberately change types during operations or assignments, and how developers define custom conversions.

Typical forms of conversion include implicit (automatic) conversions, explicit conversions, and user-defined conversions. Implicit conversions occur without programmer intervention when a language determines a safe or widening change, such as promoting an int to a long in many statically typed languages. Explicit conversions require an explicit cast or conversion function, as when narrowing a long to an int or converting between incompatible types. User-defined conversions are provided by the programmer and may be implemented via constructors, conversion operators, or dedicated conversion functions in languages that support them.

Conversions are commonly categorized by the kinds of values involved, including numeric, boolean, string, date/time, and reference or pointer types. Examples include converting numbers between integer and floating-point representations, turning a numeric value into its string form, parsing a string to a date, or converting object references between compatible types. Languages differ in handling edge cases such as overflow, precision loss, or invalid input, and in whether conversions raise errors, return defaults, or perform language-specific coercion rules.
