Contrarianindikatorer, or contrarian indicators, are analytical tools used in investing and finance that suggest a particular asset or market is likely to move in the opposite direction of the prevailing sentiment. The core principle behind contrarian indicators is that extreme optimism or pessimism among investors can often signal an impending market reversal.

When the majority of investors are highly bullish, it suggests that most potential buyers have already entered the market, leaving fewer participants to drive prices higher. This can be seen as a sign that the market is overextended and vulnerable to a downturn. Conversely, widespread bearishness or panic can indicate that most sellers have already exited, potentially creating an oversold condition and an opportunity for prices to rebound.

Examples of contrarian indicators include sentiment surveys, put/call ratios, and the performance of certain market segments. For instance, a high put/call ratio, where more investors are buying put options (betting on a price decline) than call options (betting on a price increase), can be a bullish contrarian signal. Similarly, if a survey shows an overwhelming majority of investors are bullish, a contrarian might interpret this as a bearish signal.

The application of contrarian indicators requires careful analysis and is not a foolproof method. It relies on the assumption that human psychology and herd behavior play a significant role in market movements. Traders and investors who utilize these indicators aim to profit by going against the crowd, buying when others are fearful and selling when others are greedy.
