Contextsarchaeology, also known as contextual archaeology or the contextual approach, is a theoretical framework within archaeology that emphasizes the importance of understanding the context of an artifact or feature to interpret its meaning. This approach posits that an object's significance cannot be understood in isolation but rather through its relationship to its surrounding environment, other artifacts, and the broader cultural and historical processes that produced and utilized it.

The core principle of contextsarchaeology is that artifacts are not simply objects to be collected and categorized but are embedded within a system of relationships. This includes the spatial relationships between artifacts at a given site, their association with specific features like hearths or burials, and their placement within larger settlement patterns. Furthermore, the approach considers the temporal context, understanding how an object fits into a chronological sequence and how its use and deposition may have changed over time.

Practitioners of contextsarchaeology meticulously record the precise location and associations of all finds. This detailed data collection allows for the reconstruction of past activities and behaviors.
