Conodon

Conodon is a genus of ray-finned fish belonging to the family Haemulidae, commonly known as grunts. These fish are found in the western Atlantic Ocean. The genus currently contains only one recognized species, Conodon nobilis, often referred to as the knotfin grunt. This species inhabits shallow coastal waters, estuaries, and mangrove areas.

The knotfin grunt is characterized by its moderately compressed body and a terminal mouth. They possess a distinct dorsal fin with a notched appearance, which gives rise to their common name. The coloration of Conodon nobilis typically includes silvery sides with faint vertical bars and a dark spot on the operculum (gill cover). Their diet consists primarily of small invertebrates and crustaceans.

These fish are not typically targeted by commercial fisheries but may be caught by recreational anglers. While generally considered of minor importance economically, they play a role in the coastal ecosystem. Conodon species are oviparous, reproducing by laying eggs.
