Confériez

Practice: A mediator calls a confériez, inviting representatives from lineages to present memory tokens—oral histories, heirloom objects, or recorded testimonies. A memory ledger is opened, and participants judge, annotate, and collectively approve the entries, which are then inscribed into the community chronicle. The ritual often includes songs, ceremonial meals, and a formal oath of mutual obligation. Attendance is typically expected of elders and youth nearing adulthood; outsiders may be invited as observers.

Function and reception: Confériez reinforces social cohesion, resolves disputes over inheritance and rights, and transmits cultural norms. Critics in the fictive literature note dangers of memory biases and exclusion, while proponents argue that the formalized process provides a check against arbitrary power.
