Comédie refers to a genre of dramatic literature and performance that aims to entertain through humor, satire, or light-hearted situations, often contrasting with tragedy, which deals with more serious or somber themes. The term originates from the Latin *comedia*, meaning "festive procession" or "revel," and has roots in ancient Greek theater, where comedies were performed alongside tragedies during religious festivals honoring Dionysus.

In classical antiquity, comedies typically featured exaggerated characters, wordplay, and social commentary, often targeting political or cultural figures. The works of Aristophanes in ancient Greece are notable examples, blending humor with critiques of society. During the Renaissance, comedy evolved in Europe, with playwrights like William Shakespeare (*A Midsummer Night’s Dream*, *Twelfth Night*) and Molière (*The Misanthrope*, *Tartuffe*) refining the form. Molière, in particular, became synonymous with French comedy, using wit and satire to expose human folly.

Comédie can be broadly categorized into several subgenres, including farce, which relies on slapstick humor and exaggerated situations; satire, which uses irony and exaggeration to critique institutions or individuals; and romantic comedy, which emphasizes love stories with comedic elements. Modern comedy encompasses a wide range of styles, from slapstick and improv to absurdist and satirical performances, often found in film, television, and stand-up comedy.

The structure of a comedy often includes a clear conflict, a resolution that restores balance or harmony, and a happy or at least satisfactory ending. Unlike tragedy, which explores human suffering and moral dilemmas, comedy tends to emphasize reconciliation, social cohesion, and the triumph of wit or love.
