Compatibilizing
Compatibilizing is the practice of making otherwise immiscible polymers compatible in a blend by introducing a compatibilizer or by in-situ reactions that create interfacial adhesion. The goal is to reduce interfacial tension, stabilize the morphology, and improve dispersion of one phase within another, leading to improved mechanical properties such as impact strength and toughness.
Mechanisms and strategies: Compatibilizers are typically copolymers or functionalized polymers that have affinity for both phases.
Common approaches: adding a copolymer with segments compatible with both polymers; using grafted polyolefins (for example
Applications: compatibilizing is widely used in polymer blends such as polyolefin/polystyrene, polyamide/polyolefin, and biodegradable blends (for
Evaluation and limitations: morphology is typically assessed by microscopy; rheological measurements and differential scanning calorimetry are
