Comms, short for communications, denotes the exchange of information between two or more parties. It covers the transmission, routing, and reception of voice, data, text, and video through wired, wireless, optical, and satellite channels. Modern comms enable global connectivity for people and machines, supporting services such as telephony, email, messaging, internet access, and industrial control systems.

It relies on layered architectures and a variety of networks, including fixed networks (telephone and fiber), mobile networks (cellular), wireless LANs, and satellite systems. Core concepts include physical media, data link and network layers, routing, switching, and end-to-end protocols. Common architectures range from private enterprise networks to public communications networks and the internet.

Standards bodies (ITU, IEEE, IETF) coordinate interoperability and spectrum management. Compliance and licensing govern spectrum use, numbering, and privacy. Security measures such as encryption, authentication, and integrity protection are essential.

Applications span voice calls, text messaging, video conferencing, file transfer, real-time control, and telemetry. In industry and defense, dedicated secure comms systems support command and control. In consumer markets, mobile broadband and Wi-Fi services form the backbone of everyday connectivity.
