Commissionerate
Commissionerate, also spelled commissionerate, is a term used to describe an administrative division or governance structure in which a Commissioner exercises executive authority over the area. In common usage, it is most closely associated with police administration in India, where major cities are governed by a Police Commissioner rather than by a district-level police chief and a separate civil administrator. Under a police commissionerate, police powers are centralized under the Commissioner of Police, who heads the city police force and is responsible for policing, crime control, traffic management, and related operations. The city may be subdivided into zones or units led by Deputy or Additional Commissioners of Police, with specialized wings for crime, traffic, economic offences, and other areas. By contrast, non-commissionerate districts usually operate under a Superintendent of Police and a District Collector or Deputy Commissioner for civil administration, creating two separate lines of command for law and order and administration.
