Coextrusiontekniikka, also known as coextrusion, is a manufacturing process that involves simultaneously extruding two or more different polymer melts through a single die. This process allows for the creation of multi-layered plastic products where each layer can have a distinct material composition, thickness, and properties. The primary advantage of coextrusion is the ability to combine the desirable characteristics of different polymers into a single composite structure. For instance, one layer might provide barrier properties against oxygen or moisture, while another offers strength or UV resistance.

The coextrusion process begins with separate extruders, each processing a different polymer resin. The molten polymers are then fed into a specialized coextrusion die. This die is designed to bring the individual streams of molten plastic together in a precise manner before they exit as a single, unified profile or sheet. Cooling and solidification of the multi-layered material typically occur immediately after exiting the die, often using water baths or cooling rolls.

Coextruded products are found in a wide range of applications. Packaging is a major area, with coextruded films and bottles used for food, beverages, and pharmaceuticals to enhance shelf life and product protection. In the automotive industry, coextruded components can offer improved durability and aesthetics. Other applications include construction materials like window profiles and pipes, as well as consumer goods and medical devices. The specific combination of polymers and their arrangement in layers dictates the final performance and suitability of the coextruded product for its intended use.
