Coeruliceps

Coeruliceps is a genus of small, brightly colored frogs belonging to the family Craugastoridae. The name "coeruliceps" is derived from Latin, with "coeruleus" meaning blue and "caput" meaning head, referring to the characteristic blue coloration often found on the heads of these frogs. These amphibians are native to the cloud forests and montane rainforests of Colombia and Ecuador.

Species within the Coeruliceps genus are typically characterized by their slender bodies, relatively long limbs, and distinctive toe pads, which aid in arboreal locomotion. Their coloration can vary, but many exhibit vibrant blues, greens, and yellows, often with intricate patterns. These colors are thought to serve as aposematic signals, warning potential predators of their toxicity. Coeruliceps frogs are primarily insectivorous, feeding on a variety of small invertebrates. Their reproductive biology is not extensively documented for all species, but like many direct-developing frogs, they are believed to lay terrestrial eggs that hatch into miniature froglets, bypassing a free-swimming tadpole stage. Conservation efforts are important for this genus, as their specialized habitat is susceptible to deforestation and climate change.
