Coastlinesand is a field of study and practice focused on sandy coastlines and their dynamic interfaces with the ocean. The term encompasses the interrelated physical, biological, and human dimensions of beaches, dunes, barrier systems, and nearshore environments where sand is the dominant sediment. Researchers examine how waves, tides, currents, and storms transport and deposit sediment, shaping shorelines over time, while sea-level rise and climate variability modify these processes.

Key processes include longshore transport of sediment along the coast, the swash and backwash that move material up and down the beach, dune formation and stabilization, and the growth or erosion of barrier features such as spits and crescentic beaches.
