Clypeatus

Clypeatus is a genus of beetles in the family Passalidae, commonly known as bess beetles. These beetles are typically large and stout, with a distinctive rounded body shape. They are often referred to as "stink beetles" due to their ability to release a strong, unpleasant odor when threatened or disturbed.

Clypeatus beetles are found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, with a preference for damp, humid environments. They are often associated with decaying wood or other organic matter, where they feed on fungi and other microorganisms. Some species of Clypeatus are known to be significant saproxylic insects, playing an important role in breaking down and recycling dead plant material.

Adult Clypeatus beetles are usually between 2-4 centimeters in length, with a range of colors including brown, black, and tan. Their bodies are covered in small, dense hair and feature a distinctive clypeus, or front head plate, which is often remarkably flat and shield-like in shape. Clypeatus beetles are nocturnal and have poor eyesight, relying primarily on their highly developed sense of smell to navigate and locate potential mates.

Despite their somewhat unappealing reputation, Clypeatus beetles have an important place in ecosystems, serving as both a food source for other animals and a necessary component in the decomposition process. However, they can also be considered pests under certain circumstances, as they sometimes damage wood or other materials during their feeding activities.
