Clownfische

Clownfische, also known as anemonefish, are a subfamily of marine fish belonging to the order Perciformes. They are characterized by their bright orange and white coloration, although variations in color and pattern exist among the approximately 30 recognized species. Clownfishes are small to medium-sized, typically ranging from 7 to 15 centimeters in length. They are omnivorous, feeding on algae, small invertebrates, and zooplankton.

A defining feature of clownfish is their symbiotic relationship with sea anemones. They possess a unique mucus coating on their bodies that prevents them from being stung by the anemone's nematocysts. In return for protection from predators, the clownfish clean the anemone, drive away certain predatory fish, and may even provide nutrients through their waste. This mutualistic relationship is crucial for the survival of both species.

Clownfish are protandrous hermaphrodites, meaning they are born male and can later change to female. They live in social groups within their host anemone, with a strict hierarchy. The largest and most dominant fish is the female, followed by the breeding male, and then smaller, non-breeding males. If the female dies, the breeding male will typically become the new female, and the largest of the remaining non-breeding males will become the new breeding male.

These fish are found in tropical and subtropical waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, typically in shallow reefs. They are popular in the aquarium trade due to their striking appearance and fascinating behavior.
