Closterovirus

Closterovirus is a genus of plant-infecting viruses within the family *Closteroviridae*, which are characterized by their long, flexuous filamentous particles. These viruses are primarily transmitted by insect vectors, particularly aphids, and cause significant economic losses in agriculture due to their impact on crop health and yield.

The virions of closteroviruses typically measure between 1,200 and 2,000 nanometers in length and possess a single-stranded, positive-sense RNA genome ranging from 15 to 19 kilobases in length. The genome encodes several structural and non-structural proteins essential for replication, movement within the plant, and vector transmission. Notable members of this genus include *Citrus tristeza virus* (CTV), which affects citrus plants, and *Beet yellows virus* (BYV), which impacts beets and other crops.

Closteroviruses exhibit a broad host range, infecting a variety of economically important plants such as citrus, grapes, potatoes, and vegetables. Symptoms of infection often include vein clearing, leaf yellowing, stunting, and reduced fruit quality. Some viruses, like CTV, can cause severe decline diseases, leading to plant death in susceptible varieties.

Research on closteroviruses focuses on understanding their molecular biology, improving diagnostic methods, and developing resistance strategies in crops. Molecular techniques, including reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and sequencing, are commonly used for detection and characterization. Breeding for resistance and the use of virus-resistant cultivars remain key approaches to managing closterovirus infections in agriculture. Additionally, studies on vector biology and plant-virus interactions contribute to integrated pest and disease management strategies.
