Clingframes

Clingframes are a type of temporary window covering primarily used to prevent damage from flying debris during severe weather events such as hurricanes or tornadoes. They are typically made from a clear, durable plastic film, often polyethylene or a similar polymer, that is designed to adhere directly to the exterior surface of a window pane. This adhesion is usually achieved through a static cling effect, eliminating the need for tapes or adhesives that can leave residue.

The primary function of clingframes is to act as a sacrificial layer. In the event of high winds, the clingframe can absorb some of the impact from windborne objects like branches or gravel, potentially preventing the window glass from shattering. If the window does break, the clingframe can help to hold the shattered pieces together, reducing the risk of injury from flying shards of glass and minimizing water or wind intrusion into the building.

Installation is generally straightforward. The plastic film is cut to size, often slightly larger than the window pane, and then applied to the dry exterior surface of the glass. The static electricity generated by the film as it is smoothed onto the window helps it to cling securely. Removal is equally simple, as the film can be peeled away without leaving any marks. Clingframes are a cost-effective and readily available solution for temporary protection against storm damage, often used by homeowners and businesses in hurricane-prone regions.
