Citigroup

Citigroup Inc., commonly known as Citi, is an American multinational financial services company and bank holding company. Headquartered in New York City, it operates in more than 100 countries and offers a broad range of financial services, including consumer banking, corporate and investment banking, securities trading, and wealth management.

Citigroup was formed in 1998 through the merger of Citicorp and Travelers Group, creating one of the world’s largest financial services institutions. Over the years it has reorganized its operations to emphasize two primary business lines: Global Consumer Banking and Institutional Clients Group, with various supporting units focused on markets, private banking, and asset management.

Global Consumer Banking serves retail customers with services such as checking and savings, credit cards, mortgages, and small-business lending. Institutional Clients Group provides corporate and investment banking, markets and securities services, and private banking to institutional clients, including corporations, financial institutions, and governments. Citi also maintains a significant presence in wealth management and investment research through its subsidiaries.

Citigroup is regarded as a systemically important financial institution and is regulated as a bank holding company by U.S. authorities. It has historically been designated a global systemically important bank by international regulators. During the 2008 financial crisis, Citi received support through the Troubled Asset Relief Program and subsequently repaid the funds.

In recent years, Citi has emphasized risk management, cost control, and digital banking, while continuing to expand in key international markets and adjust its non-core asset portfolio as part of strategic realignment.
