Cirdan

Círdan the Shipwright is a Sindarin Elf of the Teleri lineage in J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium. He is best known as the Lord of the Falathrim, the ship-building people of the Falas, and as the keeper of Mithlond, the Grey Havens, in Lindon. Described as ancient, patient, and wise, he is one of the oldest and most enduring leaders among the Elves of Middle-earth.

In the First Age, Círdan’s people were renowned seafarers and shipwrights. He formed a close bond with Ulmo, the Vala of Waters, whose gifts and guidance helped shape his craft. Mithlond under his watch became a crucial harbor for Elves traveling to Aman, and he welcomed the Exiles who returned to Middle-earth, aiding their passage and sustaining a network of ships and counsel along the western coast.

In the Second and Third Ages, Círdan served as the Lord of the Grey Havens, maintaining the western port as a departure point for Elves, travelers, and messengers. He is most noted in Tolkien’s writings for bearing Narya, the Ring of Fire, one of the Three Rings of the Elves, and for presenting it to Gandalf when the wizard arrived at the Havens to aid in the struggle against Sauron.

Círdan’s legacy centers on seafaring and the Western Sea. His life marks the gradual departure of the Elves from Middle-earth as ships sail west to Aman, signaling the end of an era for the Elven realms in the western lands.
