Ciborinia

Ciborinia is a genus of fungi belonging to the family Sclerotiniaceae. These fungi are characterized by the formation of sclerotia, which are hardened, resting structures that allow them to survive unfavorable conditions. The genus includes several species, many of which are plant pathogens.

A well-known species, Ciborinia camelliae, is responsible for the disease known as camellia blight. This disease affects camellia plants, causing significant damage to flowers and foliage. The sclerotia of Ciborinia camelliae are typically dark, irregular, and can persist in the soil for extended periods. When conditions are favorable, these sclerotia germinate and produce apothecia, which are cup-shaped fruiting bodies that release ascospores. These spores then infect new host plants, perpetuating the disease cycle.
