Chromiumpolluted is a term used to describe the presence of chromium in the environment at levels considered harmful to human health and ecosystems. Chromium is a naturally occurring element found in rocks, soil, water, and air. It exists in two primary forms: trivalent chromium (Cr III) and hexavalent chromium (Cr VI). While trivalent chromium is an essential nutrient for humans, hexavalent chromium is a known carcinogen and toxic substance.

Sources of chromium pollution can be both natural and anthropogenic. Natural sources include volcanic activity and the weathering of chromium-bearing rocks. However, the majority of chromium pollution stems from industrial activities. These include the production of stainless steel and other alloys, leather tanning, chrome plating, wood preservation, and the manufacturing of pigments and dyes. Wastewater discharges from these industries are a significant contributor to chromium contamination in water bodies. Airborne chromium can result from industrial emissions.

The impact of chromium pollution varies depending on the form of chromium and the level of exposure. Hexavalent chromium is more mobile and readily absorbed by organisms. Exposure can lead to respiratory problems, skin irritation, kidney damage, and an increased risk of cancer, particularly lung cancer. In aquatic environments, high concentrations of chromium can be toxic to fish and other aquatic life, disrupting ecosystems. Remediation of chromium-polluted sites often involves methods such as soil washing, bioremediation, or the chemical reduction of hexavalent chromium to the less toxic trivalent form.
