Chromatin repressors are proteins that play a crucial role in gene regulation by inhibiting gene expression. They achieve this by influencing the structure of chromatin, the complex of DNA and proteins that forms chromosomes. Chromatin exists in various states, ranging from a condensed, transcriptionally inactive state (heterochromatin) to a more relaxed, transcriptionally active state (euchromatin). Repressors generally promote the formation or maintenance of heterochromatin, thereby making DNA less accessible to the transcription machinery.
