Childfeeding

Childfeeding refers to the practices by which caregivers provide nutrition to children from infancy through early childhood. It encompasses feeding methods (breastfeeding, formula feeding), the timing and type of complementary foods, meal patterns, and the safety and social aspects of feeding.

Breastfeeding is widely recommended as the preferred method of feeding for most infants. Exclusive breastfeeding is advised for about the first six months, with continued breastfeeding alongside appropriate complementary foods for up to two years or longer. When breastfeeding is not possible, iron-fortified infant formula can be used.

Complementary feeding should begin around six months, with gradually increased texture and variety. Emphasize iron-rich foods such as meats, fortified cereals, and legumes; introduce fruits, vegetables, and grains. Avoid added salt and added sugars in young children, and steer clear of unsafe or choking hazards.

Practice responsive feeding by watching hunger and fullness cues and avoiding coercive or forced eating. Establish regular meal and snack times appropriate to age, offer water as needed, and provide safe, appealing foods in appropriate portions.

Safety and practical considerations include clean preparation and storage of foods, proper formula preparation when used, avoiding honey in the first year, and supervising young children to prevent choking. Public health aims include preventing malnutrition and supporting healthy growth for all children.
