Chelationsterapi

Chelationsterapi, or chelation therapy, is a medical treatment that uses chelating agents to bind metal ions in the body, forming stable complexes that are excreted in urine or feces. The approach aims to reduce the body's burden of toxic metals and certain minerals.

Chelating agents include EDTA, dimercaprol, DMSA, DMPS, penicillamine, and deferoxamine. They act by forming a ring or complex with metal ions, lowering their biological activity and increasing renal or biliary elimination. The specific agent and route depend on the metal involved and the clinical context.

In medicine, chelation therapy is an established treatment for heavy metal poisoning (for example lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic). It is also used for iron overload with deferoxamine and related drugs, and for copper overload in Wilson’s disease with penicillamine or trientine. Most other uses and claims lack robust evidence and are considered speculative outside approved indications.

Chelation therapy remains controversial outside proven indications. Some proponents have explored claims for cardiovascular disease, autism, or aging, but high-quality trials have not confirmed benefit and have often reported risks. Potential adverse effects include kidney injury, electrolyte disturbances, low blood pressure, allergic reactions, and mineral deficiencies when misused or not properly monitored.

Because chelation can affect essential minerals and interact with other medicines, it is administered under medical supervision in appropriate facilities. The treatment protocol, dosing, monitoring, and choice of chelator vary by indication and regulatory guidelines.
