Characterin

Characterin is a term used in computing to denote the operation of reading a single character from an input stream. It is not an official keyword in major programming languages, but appears in tutorials, pseudocode, and community discussions as a compact way to describe character-level input.

Definition and scope: As an abstraction, characterin refers to obtaining the next character from a stream, typically without consuming an entire line of input. In real languages, this behavior is provided by particular facilities such as getchar or fgetc in C, cin.get in C++, System.in.read in Java, or input functions in higher-level languages. The term characterin is often used when distinguishing between reading a single character and reading a whole string or line.

Encoding and semantics: The meaning of a character depends on the encoding in use. In ASCII-based contexts, a single byte may suffice; in UTF-8 or Unicode, a single character can span multiple bytes, which means a robust characterin operation must decode code points rather than raw bytes. End-of-stream indicators (such as EOF) are commonly associated with this operation.
