Chandravamsha

Chandravamsha, also known as the Lunar Dynasty, is one of the principal royal lineages mentioned in ancient Indian scriptures, particularly the Puranas and the Mahabharata. It is believed to have descended from the Moon god, Chandra. The lineage is often contrasted with the Suryavamsha, the Solar Dynasty, which is said to have descended from the Sun god, Surya.

According to traditional accounts, the Chandravamsha begins with Budha, the son of Chandra and Tara (the wife of Brihaspati). Budha married Ila, a princess who was born as a woman and later became a man. Their offspring established numerous kingdoms and dynasties across ancient India. Prominent figures in the Chandravamsha include Yayati, a powerful king who had five sons, each of whom founded significant lineages. Puru's line is particularly important, as it includes Emperor Bharata, after whom India is said to be named Bharatavarsha, and subsequently the Kauravas and Pandavas, the central figures of the Mahabharata war. Other notable rulers from this dynasty include Yayatin's son Yadu, who gave rise to the Yadava dynasty, which includes figures like Krishna.

The Chandravamsha is characterized by a rich tapestry of kings, heroes, and mythological events. Its descendants are credited with establishing significant kingdoms and shaping the political and cultural landscape of ancient India. The stories associated with the Chandravamsha often explore themes of dharma, duty, karma, and the cyclical nature of history, offering insights into the values and beliefs of ancient Indian society.
