Centroberyx

Centroberyx is a genus of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Berycidae. These fish are commonly known as alfonsinos or red breams. The genus is characterized by its bright red or reddish-orange coloration, large eyes, and a single long dorsal fin. They are typically found in temperate and tropical waters worldwide, inhabiting deep-sea environments such as seamounts, continental slopes, and rocky reefs.

Species within the Centroberyx genus are generally demersal, meaning they live and feed near the bottom. Their diet consists mainly of crustaceans, mollusks, and smaller fish. Alfonsinos are often caught by commercial fisheries, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region, and are considered a valuable food fish. Some species, like Centroberyx affinis, are also popular with recreational anglers.

The reproductive habits of Centroberyx are not extensively studied, but they are believed to be oviparous, releasing eggs and sperm into the water column. The lifespan of these fish can vary, with some individuals living for several years. Their large eyes are an adaptation to their deep-water habitat where light levels are low.
