Centrair

Centrair is the brand name of Chubu Centrair International Airport, the international airport serving the Nagoya metropolitan area in central Japan. It is located on an artificial island in Ise Bay near the city of Tokoname in Aichi Prefecture and uses IATA code NGO and ICAO code RJGG. The airport opened in 2005 to relieve congestion at Nagoya’s earlier airport and to provide a dedicated international gateway for the Chubu region.

The airport is operated by Central Japan International Airport Co., Ltd., a public-private venture involving prefectural and local authorities and private partners. Centrair features a single passenger terminal that handles both domestic and international flights, with facilities for travelers, cargo operations, shopping, and dining. The design and layout emphasize efficient transfer between domestic and international services, as well as easy access to city centers and other parts of the region.

Centrair is connected to central Nagoya and the broader region by rail and road, including an air-rail link and highway networks. While smaller than the major hubs in Tokyo and Osaka, Centrair serves as a key transportation hub for the Chubu region, supporting a mix of domestic routes to major Japanese cities and international services to selected destinations in East Asia and beyond. The airport also supports cargo traffic and acts as a regional logistics center, contributing to local tourism and industry.

Over time, Centrair has expanded services and facilities to accommodate growing passenger demand and to strengthen its international connections, maintaining its role as the primary international airport for central Japan.
