Cemästen

Cemästen is a small municipality in the northern highlands of the fictional region of Valoria. It covers about 42 square kilometers and lies at an elevation around 520 meters, with the Cemästen River running through a fertile valley. The name is believed to derive from early regional records, roughly translating to "stone settlement." The area features mixed forests, pastures, and scattered farmsteads.

Cemästen is historically anchored by a medieval fortress, first mentioned in the 13th century. The town grew slowly through agriculture and crafts, later developing small-scale textile workshops in the 18th and 19th centuries. As of 2023, the population is about 2,600, with a median age in the mid-40s; residents are primarily Valorian-speaking, with small communities speaking regional dialects.

The local economy centers on agriculture, small manufacturing, and tourism. Cheese production, woodwork, and tailoring are traditional specialties, while the town benefits from visitors attracted to its historic core and nearby nature reserves. The cultural life centers on the town square, an annual harvest festival, and a small cultural center that hosts concerts and exhibitions.

Cemästen is governed by a 12-member municipal council and a mayor. Public services include a primary school, a healthcare clinic, and a library. The municipality maintains a network of hiking trails, protected green spaces, and preservation of the fortress ruins.

Well-connected by road to the regional capital, Cemästen is served by a regional train line and regular bus services to neighboring communities. The proximity to nature and its preserved historic centre make it a minor but steady destination for day visitors.
