Unlike a whole causal pathway, a causelet captures a minimal piece that can contribute to an outcome under certain conditions. The idea emphasizes modularity: complex effects emerge from the interaction of many causelets, each with context-dependent significance.

Origin and usage: The word combines "cause" with the diminutive suffix -let, signaling a smaller unit. It is not a standard technical term in all theories of causation but appears in some philosophical and methodological writings on fine-grained causal analysis and in simulations that seek to decompose mechanisms into interacting parts.

Formalization: In formal models, a causelet is often represented as a variable or event that participates in a causal expression together with other causelets and background conditions. It may be part of conjunctive (and) or disjunctive (or) structures modeling how combinations of causelets produce effects. The notion helps describe how many small influences collectively realize a macroscopic outcome.

Examples: In epidemiology, a causelet might be a genetic variant that modestly increases risk, relevant only in the presence of an environmental exposure. In a climate model, a causelet could be a local temperature spike contributing to a rain event when other factors align.

Criticism: Critics argue that causelets can over-fragment causal analysis, creating excessive complexity and measurement challenges. Others note that the same phenomenon may be described with fewer, more general cause descriptions, raising questions about interpretability and empirical testability.
