It supports integrated water resources management, sustainable agriculture, urban runoff control, and habitat restoration by aligning incentives and responsibilities along the watershed path.

These tools help planners understand how inputs such as nutrients, sediments, and pollutants move through the system and how interventions at one location propagate downstream.
