Working often with editors or writers, they develop concepts, draft layouts, design recurring characters, and refine gags. In comics, they balance word balloons, pacing, and panel transitions to guide reader interpretation. In animation, they propose sequences, expressions, and movements that will later be translated by animators.

History: Political caricature and satirical drawings emerged in print in the 18th and 19th centuries; later, daily or weekly comic strips became a staple of popular press. Notable figures include early caricaturists and modern comic artists who defined genres and styles. The field expanded with the rise of comic books and online media, giving rise to a wide range of genres and audiences.
