In E1 reactions, a proton is removed from an adjacent carbon atom, leading to the formation of an alkene. Carbocation rearrangements, such as the 1,2-hydride shift or 1,2-alkyl shift, occur when a more stable carbocation can be formed by migrating a hydrogen or alkyl group. The stability of carbocations is influenced by inductive effects and hyperconjugation, with tertiary carbocations being more stable than secondary, and secondary more stable than primary.
