Caointeoirí

Caointeoirí were professional mourners in traditional Irish culture. Their role was to sing laments, known as caoineadh, at funerals. These laments were often improvised and expressed the grief and sorrow of the deceased's family and community. Caointeoirí were typically women, and their performance was considered an essential part of the funeral ritual, helping to release emotions and acknowledge the finality of death.
