Canalisateurs

Canalisateurs are skilled tradespeople who design, install, maintain and repair underground networks of conduits and pipes for water supply, drainage and sewer systems, and sometimes irrigation networks. They work as part of municipal, utility, or construction teams and coordinate with planners, engineers and other trades to integrate new networks with existing infrastructure.

Typical tasks include reading technical drawings, trenching and backfilling, laying and aligning pipes (such as PVC, ductile iron, or HDPE), making joints and seals, and connecting to manholes, hydrants, and other components. They install valves, fittings and backflow preventers, ensure proper bedding and backfill compaction, and perform pressure or leak tests. They may also participate in trenchless methods where appropriate and supervise the safe operation of equipment on site, such as excavators and compactors. Quality control, documentation, and compliance with standards and permits are part of the role.

Training and qualifications typically come from vocational education. Common entry routes include CAP Canalisateur or equivalent, with progression to Bac Pro or higher levels. Training combines classroom instruction with hands-on on-site work, often through an apprenticeship lasting two to three years. Certifications for safety and equipment operation (for example, CACES) and familiarity with local codes for potable water, wastewater and drainage networks are common.

Working conditions are outdoor and site-based, with exposure to weather, traffic, and heavy machinery. The occupation requires attention to safety, planning, and coordination with other workers. In French-speaking regions, canalisateur denotes this specific trade; related roles exist under different titles in other countries.
