Camelot is a legendary castle and court associated with King Arthur in medieval European literature. In most depictions, Camelot serves as the seat of Arthur’s power and the center of a chivalric ideal, a place where knights gather at the Round Table to seek justice, defend the realm, and undertake holy quests. The name has since become a cultural shorthand for a utopian royal capital.

The geographical location of Camelot varies by tradition and author; some stories place it in Britain at a real-looking fort, others locate it in Gaul or on the mythical island of Avalon. The concept is often linked to the Round Table, a symbol of equality among Arthur’s knights, from which they undertake adventures such as quests for honor, wisdom, and occasionally the Holy Grail. The stories emphasize courtly culture, diplomacy, and ritual feasts.

The character of Camelot evolved over centuries. Geoffrey of Monmouth’s 12th‑century Historia Regum Britanniae presents Arthur as ruler of a powerful, centralized kingdom with a grand court at Camelot. In later romances, notably those by Chrétien de Troyes and the Post-Vulgate cycle, the Grail quest and refined knightly codes are developed. Sir Thomas Malory’s Le Morte d'Arthur (imperfectly) canonizes the material, and T. H. White’s The Once and Future King reinterprets it for modern readers.

In modern times, Camelot remains a potent symbol of idealized monarchy, chivalry, and communal identity. It appears frequently in literature, film, and theater as an emblem of a golden age, even as scholars emphasize that its existence is not corroborated by historical evidence and that Camelot functions primarily as myth and literary device.
