Calyculi

Calyculi are a group of marine organisms belonging to the phylum *Cnidaria*, specifically within the class *Hydrozoa*. They are small, often transparent or translucent polyps that form colonies, typically found in shallow marine environments worldwide. The term "calyculi" is derived from the Latin word *calyx*, meaning cup, referring to their cup-shaped bodies.

These organisms are closely related to other hydrozoans such as hydras and Portuguese man o' wars. Calyculi colonies often consist of specialized polyps, including feeding polyps, reproductive polyps, and defensive polyps. Some species exhibit a unique life cycle, alternating between asexual and sexual phases. The asexual phase involves the formation of colonies through budding, while the sexual phase produces free-swimming medusae, which eventually release eggs and sperm for fertilization.

They feed primarily on plankton and small organisms captured using their tentacles, which are equipped with stinging cells called nematocysts. These stinging cells can deliver paralyzing toxins to their prey, aiding in immobilization before ingestion.
