It refers to a calcareous organic matrix in which organic detritus, microfossils, and other biogenic material are interwoven with or cemented by calcium carbonate.

Formation and composition occur when calcium carbonate precipitates onto or around organic substrates, or when carbonate sediments accumulate together with decaying organic matter. Microbial activity can mediate carbonate precipitation on organic surfaces, and diagenetic processes may cement particles into nodules, laminations, or more extensive beds. The result is a material that retains recognizable organic components while exhibiting characteristic calcareous chemistry and textures.

Occurrence is widespread in both marine and terrestrial contexts. In marine settings, calcareousorganic material appears in calcareous muds, marls, and related sediments where carbonate ions are abundant and organic matter is present. In soils and paleosols, calcareous organic matter can form in calcareous soils or as carbonate-rich humus and nodules, reflecting past biological productivity and carbonate availability.

Significance and analysis center on both the organic and carbonate components. The presence of calcareous organic matter influences porosity and diagenetic pathways in rocks and soils, climate and productivity interpretations in paleoenvironmental reconstructions, and the methods used to quantify carbon stores. Analytical approaches often separate or account for organic and carbonate phases to avoid misestimation of total carbon content.
