Calascio

Calascio is a comune (municipality) in the province of L'Aquila, in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. It is situated in the Apennine hills within the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park, near the Campo Imperatore plateau. The area is characterized by a high-mountain landscape with limestone and granite outcrops, forests, and alpine pastures, set within a small rural community.

The town’s historical core centers on Rocca Calascio, a medieval fortress and watchtower perched on a rocky summit overlooking the valley. The fortress, now in ruins, is one of the higher fortifications in the Apennines and remains a striking example of medieval military architecture. Adjacent to it is the church of Santa Maria della Rocca, a small medieval chapel connected to the fortress. Calascio preserves narrow streets and stone houses that reflect its historic character and traditional rural life.

Calascio attracts visitors for hiking, sightseeing, and its cinematic associations. Rocca Calascio and the surrounding trails offer panoramic views of the plateau and mountains, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The fortress gained international attention when it was used as a location for the film Ladyhawke. The municipality is small and rural, with an economy based on agriculture, pastoral activities, and growing tourism focused on its natural and cultural heritage.
