CPUgebundenheit, often translated as CPU-bound or processor-bound, describes a situation in computing where the performance of a program or system is primarily limited by the speed and capacity of its central processing unit (CPU). When a task is CPUgebunden, the CPU is working at or near its maximum capacity, and any other components, such as memory or disk drives, have spare capacity. This means that even if these other components were faster, the overall execution time of the task would not significantly improve because the CPU is the bottleneck.

In a CPUgebunden scenario, processes spend most of their time executing instructions, performing calculations, and waiting for the CPU to become available again. This can lead to noticeable slowdowns, unresponsiveness, and longer processing times for demanding applications like video encoding, complex simulations, scientific computations, or certain types of gaming. Identifying CPUgebundenheit is crucial for performance optimization. If a system is experiencing CPUgebundenheit, the most effective way to improve performance is typically by upgrading the CPU to a faster model with more cores or higher clock speeds, or by optimizing the software to use the CPU more efficiently. In contrast, if a task is I/O-bound, the bottleneck lies with input/output operations, such as reading from or writing to storage devices.
