COmåling

COmåling refers to the measurement of carbon monoxide concentration in air. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless and toxic gas, making accurate measurement essential for indoor safety, industrial process control, and environmental monitoring. Measurements are typically expressed in parts per million (ppm) and can be shown as instantaneous readings or averaged over time for exposure assessment.

Methods and instruments vary by application. Elektrochemical sensors are common in portable devices and domestic CO detectors, converting CO concentration into an electrical signal. Metal oxide semiconductor sensors are used in some lower-cost detectors. In industrial and research settings, non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) spectroscopy and other advanced analyzers provide higher precision and selectivity, though at higher cost. Fixed monitoring systems and portable meters serve different needs, from continuous building protection to spot checks in workplaces or labs.

Applications cover indoor air safety, occupational health, fire safety, and environmental monitoring. Domestic CO alarms warn occupants of potentially dangerous conditions in homes and apartments. In workplaces, CO meters assess exposure in areas such as combustion processes or enclosed spaces. In environmental monitoring, CO measurements contribute to air quality datasets and regulatory reporting.

Calibration and maintenance are important for reliability. Sensors are calibrated with known CO reference gases and may require periodic bump testing or replacement according to manufacturer guidelines. Regular maintenance includes sensor checks, cleaning, and ensuring proper placement and ventilation. Most detectors have an operational life measured in years, after which replacement is advised.

Standards and guidance exist in multiple regions. European standards include EN 50291 for domestic CO alarms, while the United States references NFPA 720 for detector installations. Local regulations may also specify placement, alarm thresholds, and maintenance schedules to ensure effective protection.
