COMThämmares

COMThämmares is a proposed crewed space mission concept developed by the European Space Agency (ESA). The mission aim is to send a human crew to a Martian location to conduct thorough geological and bioscience research on the planet's surface.

The COMThämmares mission plan envisions a crew of four astronauts embarking on a 500-day journey to Mars, with the spacecraft separating into two modules upon arrival: a lander and an orbiter. The lander would be used to transport the crew to a pre-selected landing site, while the orbiter would remain in orbit around Mars, serving as a communication relay and logistics hub.

Upon arrival, the crew would spend approximately 200 days on Mars, conducting scientific experiments and collecting samples from the Martian surface. The Martian surface is of particular interest to scientists, given its potential for hosting past or present life on the planet. The mission would also focus on understanding the Martian geological history, examining the planet's geological processes and phenomena.

The mission timeframe and research schedule were expected to commence in the late 2020s to early 2030s. However, the ongoing pandemic of COVID-19 and other programmatic delays could compromise the original timeline. The selection of crew members and necessary training would need to occur before launch.
