A CO2 cylinder is a pressurized vessel used to store carbon dioxide gas for a variety of applications, including beverage carbonation, medical and surgical procedures, industrial processes, fire suppression, and some welding or shielding gas setups. They are typically made from steel, aluminum, or composite materials and come in standardized sizes with a valve at the top. The cylinders are labeled with the type of gas, the working pressure, the material and safety standards, and the date of last inspection or test.

Carbon dioxide inside a cylinder can be stored as a compressed gas or as a liquid/gas mixture, depending on the design and pressure rating. When the gas is released through a regulator, the pressure is reduced to a usable level for the downstream equipment. Full cylinders contain high-pressure gas, and the exact working pressure varies by cylinder design and regulatory category. CO2 is at room temperature a gas, but in a high-pressure cylinder it may exist as a dense gas or as a liquid/gas mix.

Handling and safety are important with CO2 cylinders. They should be stored upright and secured to prevent tipping, kept away from heat sources, and protected by a valve cap when not in use. CO2 can displace oxygen in enclosed spaces, creating an asphyxiation hazard, so adequate ventilation is essential. Regulators and hoses must be compatible with CO2, and damaged cylinders or fittings should be removed from service. Do not attempt to refill cylinders without proper facilities and training.

Regular maintenance and compliance are required. Cylinders are subject to periodic hydrostatic testing and inspection, and regional regulations govern labeling, color coding, and safe storage. Color schemes and markings vary by country and manufacturer, so users should follow local guidelines and the cylinder’s label.
