CO2Löscher

CO2Löscher refers to a type of fire extinguisher that uses carbon dioxide as its extinguishing agent. These extinguishers are identifiable by their distinctive black and white colored band on the cylinder. When discharged, carbon dioxide is released as a very cold gas and a snow-like dry ice. The primary mechanism of extinguishing is by displacing oxygen, thereby starving the fire of its necessary component. A secondary effect is the cooling of the burning material, which helps to prevent re-ignition.

CO2Löscher are particularly effective for Class B fires, which involve flammable liquids, and Class C fires, which involve electrical equipment. They are also suitable for Class A fires involving ordinary combustibles, although their cooling effect is less pronounced in these situations compared to water-based extinguishers. A key advantage of CO2 extinguishers is that they leave no residue, making them ideal for protecting sensitive electronic equipment and areas where clean-up is a concern. However, due to the displacement of oxygen, they should not be used in confined spaces without adequate ventilation as they can pose an asphyxiation risk. The extreme cold of the discharge can also cause frostbite if the horn or discharge nozzle is touched directly.
